Carrie

Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher were people known to me from the movies. Obviously, Princess Leia is the one I remember most fondly, having seen the Star Wars and starting to love it mainly for her (yes, everything else was, IMHO, crap). Also obviously, I had a crush on her ;). Later on, I got the connection between Carrie and Debbie, but never really followed what was going on behind the scenes with Carrie after Star Wars. To me, the last 30 years where simply static, with Princess Leia being what she was, Star Wars being a thing of the past, etc.
With the new Star Wars movies, I began to rediscover Carrie Fisher. I got interested in her life story, her development after Star Wars, her movies, roles, her illness. Even her connection with her mother. My last discovery was she was the most normal crazy person (or the most crazy normal person).
Her death was a blow. Let me put it this way. As she was again being accepted for her most famous role, she died. And that is, in my opinion, how it was laid out for her – Pam got her. Finally.

RIP.

Strange are ways on how to read a book

Had no idea I would have to work so much during my vacation. This left me rather exhausted and feeling that I should be somehow try and read something – I still consider this to be a passive endeavour – instead of doing some active stuff (like building a web site).

But after finishing Company Town, I went for the Superforecasters, which I found heavy at the beginning. I thus, also due to lack of time (and brainpower), switched Only 10s, which was short and easy enough to be finished in a couple of hours.

Now let’s get back to Superforecasters 😉

Vacation feeling. Ever.

I belong to a class of people who are connected to their job all the time. Let us say, I am my own brand. But sometimes, when I simply want to have more than several consecutive hours of freedom in a row (more like days), this can be tough to achieve.

I will say only this. I am getting angry. I don’t remember any vacations, where I would be completely “off & carefree”.

And this is about to change.

Parallel Prolog Implementation

Was interested in Prolog implementations, with parallel execution (and/or). Sictus has some possibilities (https://sicstus.sics.se/sicstus/docs/3.7.1/html/sicstus_6.html). Also, SWI Prolog has some possibilites: http://www.swi-prolog.org/man/threads.html.

Then, I found some very old links: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/074310669090025Z, https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF03037061, https://www.it.uu.se/research/csd/theses/0025.pdf. Neatly, there is an overview paper (again, old): https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/8fe5/f71e7e6b2cc91fe7f43c266d16f9ca2fc61d.pdf

This old thread from 2007 has a lot of links: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.lang.prolog/OMkjGMqFLH4

Finally, a MapReduce construct was added to Prolog (not what I was looking for, but still): http://paginas.fe.up.pt/~ee08127/dissertation/pages/AMapReduceConstructForProlog.pdf.

So, in the end, I am confused – while this should be fairly easy to implement (intuitively speaking), there seems a large body of work declaring otherwise.
